Dear PV team, 

Thank you so much for maintaining such a great source of patent data. This may be a naive question - I was wondering if the application file is the full set of patent applications that were granted? I noticed that the number of applications in years 2019, 2018, and 2017 are much lower than those of the previous years and was wondering if these are only a subset.

Hi ydz93,

You are right that the application table is just patents that were granted, not all patent applications.  What you are seeing is the effect of the length of time it takes for a patent to be granted, which google says the average is 32 months.  So not many patents that were applied for in 2019 have gone on to be granted patents at this point but give them some time to be processed and their counts will rise (i.e. check the 2019 count in a year or two).  Same thing for the prior years which supports google's average!
