I am using the latitude and longitude in the location file to locate the patent inventor. I am curious on how the latitude and longitude in the location file is generated.

The latitude and longitude correspond to the city, but the city is an irregular polygon. I am curious on how to transform the polygon of city into a single point with specific latitude and longitude? Does the method choose the geometric center, or choose any other point?
