Pre-grant Assignee disambiguated data

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the assignee data for published patent applications.

For the pre-grant Assignee data, why is there data only for 3,660,855 published patent applications? I believe there are 10,000,000+ published applications post-2001.

Pregrant assignees and applicants

Hi Jean,

Thank you for your inquiry. Many patent applications do not list an assignee using the "assignee" section of the application, instead opting to use the "applicant" section, hence the lower number of rows in the pre-grant assignee table.

Here’s a recent example: patent application number 20240324473 (see pdf here) does not list an assignee under the "assignee header", although the applicant listed has been assigned patent rights in this case (as reflected in the “applicant_authority” field of the pg_applicant table). In other cases, patent applications may list the same entity as both an assignee and applicant, such as for patent application number 20240324471 (see pdf here).

Currently, PatentsView granted and pre-grant patent tables reflect patent data as it appears on these original PDFs, with additional information about applicant type obtained from the USPTO raw data releases. Our disambiguation currently only covers those records that appear under the "assignee" section header.

We are currently preparing a new download option that collects the full-assignee records together with the applicant records that have assignee authority in their non-disambiguated forms. We plan to provide a combined disambiguation in the future. Consider subscribing to our newsletter to be notified when these new files become available.

Let us know if you have any other questions! We’re happy to help you get what you need out of the data.

Best,
PVTeam
