Difference between PatentsView data and data presented in USPTO reports

Hello everyone,

I have been doing some quality checks on the data and I noticed that the data does not completely match USPTO published reports. PatentsView data  tends to have slightly more observations than the data from the USPTO. Does anyone know why is there this difference in the data? Any hints would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

One example of this is in the following table:

Table title: Utility Patent Applications

Description: This table includes USPTO application counts only for granted patents from 2007 to 2020 (where the date of the patent grant goes until 12/31/2020).
Comment: The PatentsView data was restricted to grant year<= 2020 to match the USPTO data.

withdrawn patents?

Hi Isabella,

One guess would be that the patentsview database contains withdrawn patents that may not be reflected in the USPTO's counts.  The patentsview database is made up of the bulk xml files the USPTO produces, even though some patents are withdrawn after being published in the xml files.  See https://www.uspto.gov/patents/search/withdrawn-patent-numbers   I've also run across cases where an issued patent's xml was never released so it wouldn't be in the patentsview database, see https://patentsview.org/forum/8/topic/127

I hope this helps,
